The Orphanage centers on Laura (Belén Rueda) who purchases her beloved childhood orphanage with dreams of restoring and reopening the long abandoned facility as a place for disabled children. Once there, Laura discovers that the new environment awakens her son's imagination, but the ongoing fantasy games he plays with an invisible friend quickly turn into something more disturbing. Upon seeing her family increasingly threatened by the strange occurrences in the house, Laura looks to a group of parapsychologists for help in unraveling the mystery that has taken over the place.

  • Quality Horror Film

Not your average gore and bore movie. It has many facets and keeps you entertained. There are good scares. You get a taste for the difference in Spanish horror films. Visually wonderful with a pervading eerieness. A GOOD kind of creepy... Watch it with the lights out!
  • Beautiful movie

I've seen it twice n it's a wonderful journey, unexpected n very well played, I wish there were more like this drama out there, I'm not a huge Hollywood fan.. This type of movie is just amazing
  • Subtitles & Not Scary

    By dfloth
The movie is in Spanish which is fine, but it was not scary. There was one scene that could make you jump, but that was it. No suspense, no thrills, nada. I’m a little surprised by the high rating users have given this film.
  • A Val Lewton Retread

    By Rock Hound
Back in the 1940's, Val Lewton produced very good atmospheric horror movies on a shoestring budget, e.g. The Cat People, Bedlam, I Walked with a Zombie, & The Bodysnatcher. These movies average 80 minutes and were to the point, scary, sensitive, and thoughtful. The Orphanage is a long-winded retread of such movies. With borrowings from Poltergeist and the Shining, it's rather boring, once you've seen one or two of the Lewton classics

I love “scary” movies, but most of all, I love a really good story. This movie has both. My absolute favorite movie of all time.
  • Very Good Movie

I did not mind the subtitles as I have seen many films in this way. To tell you the truth the subtitles just make you really pay attention to the story. This really is not a horror movie (it was not scary in a horror movie way) it does have supernatural elements to it but that was not the meaning of the film. The acting was very good I am glad I finally watched it. Wished I would have watched it when it was free on Netflix but still worth the $4.
